About Image to SVG

When to use it

A quick way to get an editable vector starting point from a drawing, icon or scan.

What to know

Photographs become posterised artwork and produce large SVGs, so lower the trace size and colour count for photos.

Pro tip

Open the downloaded SVG in Figma, Inkscape or Illustrator to tidy up the shapes.

Image to SVG: which images trace well

Any PNG, JPG or WebP can be traced, but results vary a lot with content. Flat artwork with a few solid colours, such as logos, icons, clip art, comics and line drawings, traces into neat, small SVGs. Photos become posterised artwork, made of bands of flat colour. That can look striking as a stylised effect, but it is not a faithful copy of the photo.

For a photo effect, use the Photo preset and accept a larger file, or lower Detail to get a bolder, poster-like look with fewer shapes. For artwork, the Logo and Illustration presets give much cleaner paths.

The SVG code is shown in an editor under the preview. You can change a fill colour or delete a shape and see the change immediately, then copy the code into a web page or download the file for Figma, Illustrator or Inkscape.

Image to SVG: frequently asked questions

Why is my photo SVG several megabytes?
Photos contain thousands of small colour areas, and each becomes a path. Lower Colours and Detail, or keep photos as JPG or WebP.
Can I paste the SVG code straight into my website?
Yes. Use Copy SVG Code and paste it into your HTML. It scales to its container and stays sharp on any screen.
How does image to SVG conversion work?
The image is reduced to a limited colour palette, the edges of each colour area are traced, and smooth curves are fitted to them. The result is an editable SVG made of vector paths.
Is the result a smooth vector?
Yes, edges become smooth curves. It works best on logos, icons and illustrations with flat colours. Photos turn into stylised, posterised artwork because a vector cannot hold every shade, so use more colours for photos.
Can I edit the SVG?
Yes. Edit the code in the editor and the preview updates, or open the downloaded file in Figma, Illustrator or Inkscape.
How do I get a smaller file?
Lower the colour count and trace size, and raise speck removal. Fewer colours and shapes give much smaller SVGs.
