About PNG to SVG
When to use it
Flat logos, icons and illustrations can become scalable shapes for print or web.
What to know
Edges are traced into smooth curves, but each colour area becomes a flat shape, so gradients turn into bands. It works best with a few clear colours.
Pro tip
Start with the Logo preset. Fewer colours and more speck removal give a smaller, cleaner SVG.
Tracing a PNG into a clean SVG
Tracing works in three steps. The image is reduced to a small palette of colours, the outline of each colour area is followed pixel by pixel, and smooth curves are fitted to those outlines. The result is a set of filled paths that can be scaled to any size without blurring, which is what you need for signs, embroidery, laser cutting and print.
PNG is the best input because its edges are clean and it may already have a transparent background. Start with the Logo preset, which uses few colours and strong speck removal. Then raise Colours only until every part of the design has its own colour, since each extra colour adds more paths and a bigger file.
The shape count and file size shown under the preview tell you how complex the SVG is. A clean logo is usually a few dozen shapes and a few kilobytes. If you see thousands of shapes, lower Colours or Detail.

PNG to SVG: frequently asked questions
- Can I use the SVG for a cutting machine or embroidery?
- Yes. Use the Logo preset with as few colours as possible, then open the SVG in your machine's software and check that each colour is one clean shape.
- Why does my SVG have a white box behind the logo?
- The background was traced as its own colour. Remove the background first with the background remover so it becomes transparent, then trace again.
- How does image to SVG conversion work?
- The image is reduced to a limited colour palette, the edges of each colour area are traced, and smooth curves are fitted to them. The result is an editable SVG made of vector paths.
- Is the result a smooth vector?
- Yes, edges become smooth curves. It works best on logos, icons and illustrations with flat colours. Photos turn into stylised, posterised artwork because a vector cannot hold every shade, so use more colours for photos.
- Can I edit the SVG?
- Yes. Edit the code in the editor and the preview updates, or open the downloaded file in Figma, Illustrator or Inkscape.
- How do I get a smaller file?
- Lower the colour count and trace size, and raise speck removal. Fewer colours and shapes give much smaller SVGs.
