About Remove Background from Image

When to use it

Product photos, profile pictures and thumbnails often need a clean transparent cutout.

What to know

An AI model finds the main subject, so busy and multi-coloured backgrounds are handled, but subjects that blend into the background, or have fine hair or glass edges, can come out rough.

Pro tip

If edges look rough or parts are missing, move the cutoff slider and compare with the before/after slider.

How the background remover decides what to keep

The tool uses a salient-object network, a model trained to find the main subject of a photo the way a person would notice it first. It produces a soft mask that is 1 where it is sure something is subject, 0 where it is sure something is background, and in-between values along edges, hair and shadows.

The cutoff slider decides how those in-between pixels are treated. A higher value removes more of the uncertain areas, which cleans up halos but can nibble at fine hair. A lower value keeps more of the subject, which is useful for fluffy pets and wispy edges, but may leave a faint fringe. The default of 45 suits most portraits and products.

The result is a PNG with a transparent background, up to 2400 px on the longest side. The model runs in your browser, so the first use downloads it once (about 44 MB), and after that removal takes a few seconds even without a fast connection.

Remove Background from Image: frequently asked questions

What kinds of photos work best?
A single clear subject, such as a person, animal, product or vehicle, that stands out from the background. Group photos, scenes with no obvious subject and objects that match the background colour are harder.
What is the maximum output size?
The cutout is produced at up to 2400 px on the longest side. Upscale it afterwards if you need it larger.
How does the background remover work?
An AI model (a U²-Net segmentation network) runs in your browser, finds the main subject and removes everything else, including busy or multi-coloured backgrounds. The first use downloads the model (about 44 MB), which your browser then keeps.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Processing happens in your browser, so your image stays on your device.
Why is some background left behind?
Move the cutoff slider up to remove more, or down to keep more of the subject. Subjects that blend into the background, or have fine hair or glass edges, are the hardest cases.
What format do I get?
A PNG with a transparent background, ready for design tools, stores and presentations.
