About PNG to JPG
When to use it
JPG suits photos and email attachments, where small file size matters more than perfect edges.
What to know
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the colour you choose (white by default).
Pro tip
Use 85-92% quality for photos. Text and sharp graphics can show fringes, so keep those as PNG.
PNG to JPG: making files smaller
JPG is the right format for photos: a PNG photo converted to JPG at 85-90% quality is often a tenth of the size with no visible difference. That matters for email attachments, upload limits and web pages. Screenshots and graphics with sharp text are the exception, because JPG adds faint ripples around hard edges.
JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels need a colour. White is the default, but you can pick any fill colour, for example to match the background of a page or slide.
The quality slider controls the trade-off between size and detail. Below about 70% blocks become visible in skies and skin, and above 95% the file grows quickly with little visible gain.

PNG to JPG: frequently asked questions
- What quality should I use?
- 85% is a good default for photos. Go to 90-95% for prints, or 70-80% when the file must be as small as possible.
- Why do edges of text look fuzzy in my JPG?
- JPG compression struggles with sharp, high-contrast edges. Keep screenshots and text-heavy graphics as PNG, or raise quality above 92%.
- Is the conversion private?
- Yes. The HTML5 Canvas API converts the image locally, so nothing is uploaded to a server.
- Will converting to JPG lose quality?
- JPG and WebP are lossy. Use the quality slider (90%+ is visually near-identical). PNG is lossless but larger.
- What happens to transparency?
- JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a colour you choose (white by default). PNG and WebP keep transparency.
- Which format should I pick?
- Use PNG for logos and screenshots, JPG for photos, and WebP for the smallest web-ready files.
