About WEBP to JPG

When to use it

JPG is accepted by almost every printer, email client and marketplace upload form.

What to know

Transparency is replaced with a solid colour, and re-encoding a lossy WebP as JPG adds a second round of compression.

Pro tip

Keep quality at 90% or higher to limit the second compression pass.

WebP to JPG: for printers, email and marketplaces

JPG is still the format almost every print service, email client and marketplace upload form accepts without question. Converting a WebP to JPG is the quickest way to make a web image usable in those places, while keeping the file reasonably small.

Both formats are lossy, so the conversion adds a second round of compression on top of the WebP's own. Using 90% quality or higher keeps that second pass almost invisible. Transparent areas are filled with the colour you choose, white by default.

If you plan to edit the image several times, convert to PNG instead and only export to JPG at the very end. Every JPG save adds a little more loss.

WEBP to JPG: frequently asked questions

Is WebP to JPG lossless?
No. JPG is lossy, so some detail is lost. At 90% or above the difference is very hard to see.
Why is my JPG bigger than the WebP?
WebP compresses more efficiently than JPG at the same visual quality, so a JPG of similar quality is usually larger.
Is the conversion private?
Yes. The HTML5 Canvas API converts the image locally, so nothing is uploaded to a server.
Will converting to JPG lose quality?
JPG and WebP are lossy. Use the quality slider (90%+ is visually near-identical). PNG is lossless but larger.
What happens to transparency?
JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a colour you choose (white by default). PNG and WebP keep transparency.
Which format should I pick?
Use PNG for logos and screenshots, JPG for photos, and WebP for the smallest web-ready files.
