About PNG to WEBP
When to use it
WebP files are usually much smaller than PNG, which speeds up web pages.
What to know
WebP keeps transparency, but below 100% quality it is lossy, so use 100% when you need pixel-exact output.
Pro tip
Start at 80-90% quality and compare file sizes. Screenshots with text may need a higher setting.
PNG to WebP: faster web pages
WebP was designed for the web. A photo saved as WebP is typically 25-35% smaller than a JPG of the same quality and much smaller than a PNG, and WebP keeps transparency. Swapping PNGs for WebP is one of the simplest ways to speed up a website and improve page-speed scores.
Choose quality by content. Photos look the same at 80-85%, which gives the biggest savings. Logos, icons and screenshots with sharp text are best at 95-100%: at 100% the output is very close to the original pixels while still often smaller than PNG.
Every current browser supports WebP, but a few email clients and older desktop programs do not. Keep the original PNG if you need to send the image by email or edit it later.

PNG to WEBP: frequently asked questions
- How much smaller will my image be?
- It depends on the content. Photos often shrink by 70-90% compared with PNG, while flat graphics shrink less.
- Do all browsers support WebP?
- Yes, all current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP.
- Is the conversion private?
- Yes. The HTML5 Canvas API converts the image locally, so nothing is uploaded to a server.
- Will converting to JPG lose quality?
- JPG and WebP are lossy. Use the quality slider (90%+ is visually near-identical). PNG is lossless but larger.
- What happens to transparency?
- JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a colour you choose (white by default). PNG and WebP keep transparency.
- Which format should I pick?
- Use PNG for logos and screenshots, JPG for photos, and WebP for the smallest web-ready files.
