About Make a Transparent Background

When to use it

Stickers, overlays and presentation graphics need transparent backgrounds so they sit on any colour.

What to know

The output is a PNG with an alpha channel. Formats such as JPG cannot store transparency.

Pro tip

Place the PNG over a dark and a light background to check for leftover fringes.

Making a background transparent, and checking it

A transparent background lets a picture sit on any colour: a sticker on a T-shirt mock-up, a logo on a dark website header, a headshot on a coloured slide. Transparency is stored in the PNG's alpha channel, which records how see-through each pixel is, so edges can fade softly instead of ending in a hard cut.

Edges are where cutouts go wrong. Always check the result on both light and dark backgrounds: a faint white fringe is invisible on white but obvious on black. The before/after slider shows the checkerboard pattern behind the cutout to help with this. Adjust the cutoff until the fringe disappears.

If the transparent image will be used on the web, convert it to WebP afterwards. WebP keeps the alpha channel at a fraction of the PNG file size.

Make a Transparent Background: frequently asked questions

Which formats support transparency?
PNG, WebP, GIF and SVG do. JPG does not, so a transparent image saved as JPG gets a solid background.
How do I add a new background colour?
Place the transparent PNG over any colour in your design tool, or convert it to JPG with the PNG to JPG converter and pick a fill colour.
How does the background remover work?
An AI model (a U²-Net segmentation network) runs in your browser, finds the main subject and removes everything else, including busy or multi-coloured backgrounds. The first use downloads the model (about 44 MB), which your browser then keeps.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Processing happens in your browser, so your image stays on your device.
Why is some background left behind?
Move the cutoff slider up to remove more, or down to keep more of the subject. Subjects that blend into the background, or have fine hair or glass edges, are the hardest cases.
What format do I get?
A PNG with a transparent background, ready for design tools, stores and presentations.
