About Remove Background from JPG

When to use it

JPG photos of people, products and animals can be cut out even when the background is busy.

What to know

JPG compression adds noise around edges, which can soften the cutout slightly. The AI still separates the subject from the background.

Pro tip

Download the result as PNG. Saving it as JPG would bring a solid background back.

Cutting out a JPG photo

Most phone and camera photos are JPGs, so this is the most common kind of cutout: a person for a profile picture, a product for a listing, a pet for a card. JPG cannot store transparency, so the result is always saved as a PNG, which keeps the removed areas see-through.

JPG compression leaves faint noise and colour blotches around high-contrast edges. The AI mask is built from a smoothed copy of the image, so that noise has little effect on which areas count as subject. It can still leave a slightly soft edge. If you see a thin coloured outline, raise the cutoff by 5-10 points.

If the JPG is small or blurry, run it through the upscaler first. A larger, cleaner source gives a sharper mask edge, and you can always shrink the PNG later.

Remove Background from JPG: frequently asked questions

Why can't I download the cutout as JPG?
JPG has no transparency, so saving as JPG would fill the background with a solid colour again. Use the PNG, or convert it with the PNG to JPG tool if you want a white background.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The model runs in your browser and the photo never leaves your device.
How does the background remover work?
An AI model (a U²-Net segmentation network) runs in your browser, finds the main subject and removes everything else, including busy or multi-coloured backgrounds. The first use downloads the model (about 44 MB), which your browser then keeps.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Processing happens in your browser, so your image stays on your device.
Why is some background left behind?
Move the cutoff slider up to remove more, or down to keep more of the subject. Subjects that blend into the background, or have fine hair or glass edges, are the hardest cases.
What format do I get?
A PNG with a transparent background, ready for design tools, stores and presentations.
