About Upscale JPG to 2K
When to use it
2K (about 2048 px wide) suits social posts, thumbnails and slides. The 2x preset reaches it from a source of roughly 1000 px.
What to know
JPG is lossy, so existing compression blocks get enlarged along with the picture. Keep denoise around 30-50% to soften them before upscaling.
Pro tip
Try 2x first. If the image still looks soft, run the result through again instead of jumping straight to 8x.
Upscaling a JPG to 2K
2K usually means an image about 2048 px wide, or 2560 × 1440 when people talk about 2K monitors. A typical starting point is a JPG of around 1000-1280 px: a photo from an older phone, a picture saved from a website or a frame grabbed from a video. The 2x preset turns a 1024 × 768 JPG into 2048 × 1536, which is enough for a full-width blog image, a presentation slide or a sharp Instagram post.
JPG compression stores images as 8 × 8 pixel blocks. When a JPG is enlarged, those blocks and the faint 'mosquito' noise around edges grow with it. A moderate denoise setting smooths them before the AI pass, so the network rebuilds clean edges instead of sharpening the artefacts.
Because 2x is a small step, the result usually looks very natural. If a photo was saved at very low quality, run it once at 2x, check the before/after slider and only then decide whether a second pass is worth it.

Upscale JPG to 2K: frequently asked questions
- My JPG is already 1920 px wide. Should I still use 2x?
- You can, but the gain will be small because the AI works on a reduced copy of large images. Upscaling helps most when the source is about 1000 px or less.
- Why is the 2K result a PNG and not a JPG?
- Saving as PNG avoids a second round of JPG compression. If you need a JPG for upload limits, convert the PNG with the PNG to JPG converter at 90% quality.
- How does AI image upscaling work?
- A neural network (ESRGAN) predicts the missing detail when an image is enlarged, instead of just stretching pixels. It runs on your own device, so the image is not uploaded anywhere, and the first run downloads about 5 MB of AI engine.
- What is the difference between 2x, 4x and 8x?
- The factor multiplies width and height. 4x turns a 1000×1000 image into 4000×4000 (16 times the pixels). Higher factors need cleaner sources to look good.
- What do denoise and color boost do?
- Denoise lightly smooths compression grain before upscaling, and color boost lifts saturation and contrast for flat photos.
- Is there a maximum output size?
- Output is capped at 8192 pixels on the longest side. The AI step works on images up to about 768 px on the longest side (384 px on phones). Larger photos are reduced first and any extra size is added with standard enlargement, so the AI helps most on small or low-quality images.
