About Upscale JPG to 4K
When to use it
4K (about 3840 px wide) is the usual target for wallpapers, large monitors and A3 prints. Start from a source of about 1000 px for a 4x result.
What to know
JPG is lossy, so existing compression blocks get enlarged along with the picture. Keep denoise around 30-50% to soften them before upscaling.
Pro tip
Raise colour boost to 15-25% for flat-looking photos, and keep denoise low on clean images so fine texture survives.
Upscaling a JPG to 4K
4K UHD is 3840 × 2160 pixels, the resolution of most modern TVs and large monitors. To get there with the 4x preset, start from a JPG of about 960 × 540. That is the size of many web thumbnails, video stills and photos shared through messaging apps, which shrink images to save data.
A 4x enlargement multiplies the pixel count by 16, so the source quality matters a lot. Heavily compressed JPGs show blocky skies and smeared skin at this scale. Raising denoise to around 40-50% removes much of that before the AI step. Clean camera JPGs need less, around 20%, so fine textures such as hair and grass are not smoothed away.
Typical uses are desktop wallpapers, TV slideshows, digital photo frames and A3 prints. For printing, 3840 px across is enough for roughly 32 cm (12.8 in) at 300 dpi, or a larger poster viewed from a distance.

Upscale JPG to 4K: frequently asked questions
- Can I turn a 1080p JPG into 4K?
- Yes, 1920 × 1080 is exactly half of 4K, so 2x gets you there. Use the Upscale JPG to 2K page or switch the factor to 2x here.
- Will a 4K upscale look good on a TV?
- At normal viewing distance it usually looks clean and sharp. Close up you may notice that very fine detail is smoother than in a photo shot at 4K.
- How does AI image upscaling work?
- A neural network (ESRGAN) predicts the missing detail when an image is enlarged, instead of just stretching pixels. It runs on your own device, so the image is not uploaded anywhere, and the first run downloads about 5 MB of AI engine.
- What is the difference between 2x, 4x and 8x?
- The factor multiplies width and height. 4x turns a 1000×1000 image into 4000×4000 (16 times the pixels). Higher factors need cleaner sources to look good.
- What do denoise and color boost do?
- Denoise lightly smooths compression grain before upscaling, and color boost lifts saturation and contrast for flat photos.
- Is there a maximum output size?
- Output is capped at 8192 pixels on the longest side. The AI step works on images up to about 768 px on the longest side (384 px on phones). Larger photos are reduced first and any extra size is added with standard enlargement, so the AI helps most on small or low-quality images.
