About Upscale PNG to 2K

When to use it

2K (about 2048 px wide) suits social posts, thumbnails and slides. The 2x preset reaches it from a source of roughly 1000 px.

What to know

PNG keeps lossless detail and transparency, which makes it the best source for logos, screenshots and pixel art. The result downloads as PNG.

Pro tip

Try 2x first. If the image still looks soft, run the result through again instead of jumping straight to 8x.

Upscaling a PNG to 2K

PNG is lossless, so a PNG source has no compression blocks to clean up. That makes 2x on a PNG one of the most reliable upscales you can do. Common sources are screenshots, UI mockups, diagrams, game captures and exported graphics. A 1280 × 720 screenshot becomes 2560 × 1440 (QHD, often sold as 2K), sharp enough for a modern laptop screen.

Text and thin lines are the main thing to watch. The AI rebuilds edges well, but it can soften very small text slightly. Keep denoise at 0-10% for screenshots so letters stay crisp, and leave colour boost off so interface colours match the original.

Transparency is kept. If your PNG has a transparent background, the upscaled PNG keeps it, with the alpha edges enlarged smoothly, which makes this useful for logos and stickers that need to be twice as big.

Upscale PNG to 2K: frequently asked questions

Does the PNG keep its transparent background?
Yes. The tool detects transparency, upscales the colour and the alpha channel separately, and joins them again in the final PNG.
Can I upscale pixel art with this?
The AI smooths pixel edges, which suits illustrations but not retro pixel art. For hard-edged pixels, use a nearest-neighbour resize in an image editor.
How does AI image upscaling work?
A neural network (ESRGAN) predicts the missing detail when an image is enlarged, instead of just stretching pixels. It runs on your own device, so the image is not uploaded anywhere, and the first run downloads about 5 MB of AI engine.
What is the difference between 2x, 4x and 8x?
The factor multiplies width and height. 4x turns a 1000×1000 image into 4000×4000 (16 times the pixels). Higher factors need cleaner sources to look good.
What do denoise and color boost do?
Denoise lightly smooths compression grain before upscaling, and color boost lifts saturation and contrast for flat photos.
Is there a maximum output size?
Output is capped at 8192 pixels on the longest side. The AI step works on images up to about 768 px on the longest side (384 px on phones). Larger photos are reduced first and any extra size is added with standard enlargement, so the AI helps most on small or low-quality images.
