About Upscale WEBP to 2K
When to use it
2K (about 2048 px wide) suits social posts, thumbnails and slides. The 2x preset reaches it from a source of roughly 1000 px.
What to know
WebP files are often compressed hard for the web, so artefacts can show at large sizes. The result downloads as PNG so it is not compressed a second time.
Pro tip
Try 2x first. If the image still looks soft, run the result through again instead of jumping straight to 8x.
Upscaling a WebP to 2K
WebP is the format most websites now serve, so images saved from online shops, news sites and social networks are often WebP files of 800-1200 px. The 2x preset turns a 1000 × 1000 product photo into 2000 × 2000, the square size many marketplaces recommend for zoomable listings.
Sites usually compress WebP aggressively to keep pages fast. That shows up as smeared fine detail and slight colour banding. A denoise setting of 25-35% evens these out before the AI rebuilds the edges. The result is saved as PNG so it is not compressed a second time.
Only upscale images you have the right to use. Pictures from other websites are usually protected by copyright, even when they are easy to download.

Upscale WEBP to 2K: frequently asked questions
- Does this work with animated WebP files?
- Only the first frame is used, because the browser canvas reads a single still image. The output is a still PNG.
- Can I get the result back as WebP?
- Yes. Download the PNG and run it through the PNG to WebP converter, choosing around 85% quality for a much smaller file.
- How does AI image upscaling work?
- A neural network (ESRGAN) predicts the missing detail when an image is enlarged, instead of just stretching pixels. It runs on your own device, so the image is not uploaded anywhere, and the first run downloads about 5 MB of AI engine.
- What is the difference between 2x, 4x and 8x?
- The factor multiplies width and height. 4x turns a 1000×1000 image into 4000×4000 (16 times the pixels). Higher factors need cleaner sources to look good.
- What do denoise and color boost do?
- Denoise lightly smooths compression grain before upscaling, and color boost lifts saturation and contrast for flat photos.
- Is there a maximum output size?
- Output is capped at 8192 pixels on the longest side. The AI step works on images up to about 768 px on the longest side (384 px on phones). Larger photos are reduced first and any extra size is added with standard enlargement, so the AI helps most on small or low-quality images.
