About Upscale WEBP to 4K

When to use it

4K (about 3840 px wide) is the usual target for wallpapers, large monitors and A3 prints. Start from a source of about 1000 px for a 4x result.

What to know

WebP files are often compressed hard for the web, so artefacts can show at large sizes. The result downloads as PNG so it is not compressed a second time.

Pro tip

Raise colour boost to 15-25% for flat-looking photos, and keep denoise low on clean images so fine texture survives.

Upscaling a WebP to 4K

Taking a WebP to 4K is common when a web image needs to become a wallpaper, a video background or a print. With the 4x preset, a 960 px wide WebP banner becomes 3840 px wide. That matches a 4K screen and is enough for an A3 print at about 250 dpi.

Lossy WebP behaves differently from JPG: instead of square blocks it tends to blur fine texture and band smooth gradients such as skies. Moderate denoise (30-40%) plus a little colour boost brings back some depth, while the AI restores sharp outlines on buildings, products and faces.

Lossless WebP files (often used for graphics and logos) behave like PNGs, so you can turn denoise down to almost zero. If you are not sure which kind you have, run once at 30% and compare with the slider.

Upscale WEBP to 4K: frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my WebP is lossy or lossless?
Photos from websites are almost always lossy. Logos and flat graphics are sometimes lossless. If the image shows smeared texture when zoomed in, treat it as lossy.
Is my WebP uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and upscaled inside your browser, and nothing is sent to our servers.
How does AI image upscaling work?
A neural network (ESRGAN) predicts the missing detail when an image is enlarged, instead of just stretching pixels. It runs on your own device, so the image is not uploaded anywhere, and the first run downloads about 5 MB of AI engine.
What is the difference between 2x, 4x and 8x?
The factor multiplies width and height. 4x turns a 1000×1000 image into 4000×4000 (16 times the pixels). Higher factors need cleaner sources to look good.
What do denoise and color boost do?
Denoise lightly smooths compression grain before upscaling, and color boost lifts saturation and contrast for flat photos.
Is there a maximum output size?
Output is capped at 8192 pixels on the longest side. The AI step works on images up to about 768 px on the longest side (384 px on phones). Larger photos are reduced first and any extra size is added with standard enlargement, so the AI helps most on small or low-quality images.
