About Upscale WEBP to 8K

When to use it

8K output is about 7680 px wide and very large. Results are capped at 8192 px on the longest side, so sources wider than about 1000 px are scaled to fit the cap.

What to know

WebP files are often compressed hard for the web, so artefacts can show at large sizes. The result downloads as PNG so it is not compressed a second time.

Pro tip

Use 8x only on small, clean sources. Noisy photos look better at 4x with denoise raised.

Upscaling a WebP to 8K

8x is for very small WebP files, such as thumbnails, avatars and stickers of 256-1024 px. A 512 px WebP sticker becomes a 4096 px PNG, and a 1024 px thumbnail reaches the 8192 px maximum. Larger WebP files are scaled to fit that cap, so for anything above about 1000 px, 2x or 4x is a better choice.

Small web images are usually the most heavily compressed, and 8x magnifies every flaw. Set denoise to 40-60% and check the before/after slider closely around faces and text. If details turn plastic, step down to 4x.

Transparent WebP stickers keep their transparency in the PNG result, which makes this a quick way to prepare a small sticker or emoji for printing on merchandise.

Upscale WEBP to 8K: frequently asked questions

Why does my 8x result look painted?
Strong denoise on a heavily compressed source removes texture along with the noise. Lower denoise to around 30%, or use 4x.
Will the transparent background survive?
Yes. Transparency in the WebP is upscaled separately and kept in the PNG output.
How does AI image upscaling work?
A neural network (ESRGAN) predicts the missing detail when an image is enlarged, instead of just stretching pixels. It runs on your own device, so the image is not uploaded anywhere, and the first run downloads about 5 MB of AI engine.
What is the difference between 2x, 4x and 8x?
The factor multiplies width and height. 4x turns a 1000×1000 image into 4000×4000 (16 times the pixels). Higher factors need cleaner sources to look good.
What do denoise and color boost do?
Denoise lightly smooths compression grain before upscaling, and color boost lifts saturation and contrast for flat photos.
Is there a maximum output size?
Output is capped at 8192 pixels on the longest side. The AI step works on images up to about 768 px on the longest side (384 px on phones). Larger photos are reduced first and any extra size is added with standard enlargement, so the AI helps most on small or low-quality images.
